Advanced Raja Ampat FAQ

Deeper-tier questions on technical diving, photography, conservation, and remote-area logistics. For divers beyond the basics.
For first-time-visitor questions, see our 30 Essential FAQ. This page covers what experienced divers, photographers, and serious enthusiasts ask.

Technical Diving

Is technical/tec diving allowed in Raja Ampat?

Yes, on private charters with proper certifications. Standard recreational depth limits apply on shared voyages. Decompression diving requires Trimix and dedicated planning.

What about CCR/rebreather diving?

CCR divers welcome. Bring your own unit + scrubber. We arrange Sofnolime supply (advance notice). Bailout cylinder rental possible.

Is Nitrox available?

Most premium phinisi have onboard Nitrox membrane compressors. EANx32 standard. Highly recommended — extends NDLs and reduces post-dive fatigue significantly.

How deep can I dive?

Standard recreational limit 30m. Tec-certified divers can go deeper with planning. Many iconic sites bottom out well below 40m.

Photography & Videography

Is there a dedicated camera room?

On premium phinisi, yes — climate-controlled with 110V/220V outlets, charging stations, workbenches, dedicated rinse tank.

Can I bring my own UW housing?

Yes. Bring spare O-rings and silicone grease. We have flush-test bins and dedicated camera workspace for setup.

Drone restrictions?

Drones allowed for guest use outside Marine Park no-fly zones. Some islands (e.g., near villages) require local permission. Crew advises.

Is there a pro photographer onboard?

Available on certain charters as add-on (~$500–2,000/week depending on coverage). Inquire during booking.

Marine Life Behavior

What's the manta success rate?

Reef manta at Manta Sandy: ~95% during Dec–Mar. Oceanic manta at Magic Mountain: ~75% with proper timing. No wild animal sighting is 100% guaranteed.

When do walking sharks emerge?

Post-sunset, ~30 min after dark. Most active 19:30–22:00 in shallow rubble flats.

Coral spawning predictability?

Typically 3–7 nights after the October or November full moon. Multiple consecutive night dives required — exact night not predictable in advance.

How are pygmy seahorses located?

Specialist guide work — examining specific Muricella gorgonian fans and Halimeda algae. Untrained eyes never spot them. Maximum 3 photos per individual.

Charters & Logistics

Solo cabin / single supplement?

Single supplement typically 50–100% of double rate. Solo travelers often paired with a stranger to avoid supplement — confirm preference at booking.

Can we customize the itinerary?

On private charters, fully customizable. On scheduled per-cabin voyages, fixed itinerary — captain has discretion on real-time adjustments.

How big is the dive group?

Maximum 4:1 diver-to-guide ratio. Total guests 6–14 depending on vessel. Smaller boats give more attention.

Can I extend to Cenderawasih (whale sharks)?

Yes — Cenderawasih Bay extension typically adds 5–7 nights. Different itinerary class. Best Apr–Oct.

Conservation

Where does the Marine Park fee go?

Funds patrol boats, ranger salaries, community programs, and the no-take zone enforcement. The fee directly preserves the diving you came for.

Is the operator licensed?

All reputable operators are licensed by Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism + Maritime Affairs. Ask for the SIUPPAR permit number if uncertain.

Sustainable practices?

Reef-safe sunscreen mandatory. Mooring (no anchoring on coral). Strict no-touch policy. Some operators donate per-guest to local conservation.

Can I dive Misool no-take zones?

Yes — observation only. The Misool Foundation maintains the zones. Entry fees included in your charter.
