The Bagan Phenomenon

Within the Raja Ampat Marine Park itself, whale shark encounters are opportunistic and rare. The reliable encounters happen 250 nautical miles east in Cenderawasih Bay.Here, a unique symbiotic relationship has formed between whale sharks and local fishermen operating traditional lift-net platforms called bagan. The sharks are drawn to small baitfish that slip from the nets — they often remain near the platforms for days. This allows snorkel and dive encounters with near-certainty.Accessing Cenderawasih Bay requires a specialized itinerary, often as an extension to a standard Raja Ampat voyage. Sightings are most common April through October but possible year-round.
