Reef Manta (Mobula alfredi)
The reef manta is the more commonly encountered species in Raja Ampat, particularly in the central region's Dampier Strait. Characterized by a dorsal surface with two white patches forming a 'Y' shape, Mobula alfredi typically reaches a maximum disc width of five meters. These mantas are largely resident to the area, moving between a known circuit of feeding grounds and cleaning stations. Their behavior is predictable, centering on specific coral bommies where cleaner wrasse, such as the bluestreak cleaner wrasse (Labroides dimidiatus), remove parasites from their skin and gills. These interactions are the focus of dives at sites like Manta Sandy.
