Less than 2cm tall, perfectly camouflaged on their specific hosts — the ultimate challenge in underwater observation. Hippocampus pontohi is endemic to Raja Ampat. Excellent buoyancy and a patient dive profile are prerequisites.

Three Species, Three Habitats

Raja Ampat is home to three pygmy seahorses, each perfectly camouflaged on its specific host:Bargibant's Pygmy (Hippocampus bargibanti) — found exclusively on Muricella gorgonian sea fans. Its body is covered in tubercles matching the polyps of the host fan.Denise's Pygmy (Hippocampus denise) — smaller and smoother. Wider variety of gorgonian hosts. Often deeper, below 25m.Pontoh's Pygmy (Hippocampus pontohi) — Raja Ampat endemic. Free-living, not attached to a gorgonian. Found on Halimeda algae or hydroids on reef walls.Finding these requires careful examination of the correct host corals — a skill our guides have honed over thousands of dives.
