It is a promise we take seriously, backed by a comprehensive and uncompromising evaluation methodology. Unlike anonymous review sites or impersonal booking engines, we personally inspect and continuously monitor every single vessel in our curated collection. Our process is transparent, rigorous, and designed with one purpose: to ensure your experience in Raja Ampat is nothing short of extraordinary.

Our evaluation is run annually by our operations desk. It is based on a proprietary 100-point scoring system across four key pillars.

The Four Pillars of Evaluation

1. Vessel Safety & Seaworthiness (40 Points)

This is our most critical and non-negotiable pillar. We only partner with vessels that demonstrate an unwavering commitment to the safety of their guests and crew.

Safety Equipment (10 pts): Onboard inspection of life rafts, EPIRB, satellite phones, emergency oxygen, comprehensive first-aid kits, and fire suppression systems.
Crew Certification (10 pts): All crew must hold valid STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers) certifications. Captains and engineers are vetted for extensive experience navigating Raja Ampat's challenging waters.
Maintenance & Engineering (5 pts): Review of engine room logs, maintenance schedules, and overall cleanliness and organization of mechanical spaces.

2. Crew, Service & Hospitality (30 Points)

The crew transforms a boat trip into a luxury experience. We assess the human element with the same rigor as the hardware.

Dive Operations (10 pts): Low guide-to-guest ratio (max 1:4), PADI/SSI certification level of dive guides, quality of rental equipment, and organization of the dive deck. Detailed and professional dive briefings are mandatory.
Hospitality & Service (10 pts): Assessment of the crew's professionalism, attentiveness, and English proficiency. The Cruise Director's leadership and guest management skills are heavily weighted.
Culinary Experience (5 pts): Quality of ingredients, menu variety, ability to cater to complex dietary restrictions, and overall dining ambiance.
Cabin & Housekeeping (5 pts): Cleanliness, comfort of bedding, quality of amenities, and attention to detail in cabin servicing.

3. Itinerary & Guest Experience (20 Points)

A great itinerary is more than a list of dive sites; it's a well-paced, thoughtfully crafted journey.

Itinerary Design (10 pts): Uniqueness of the route, knowledge of secret spots, intelligent use of tides and currents, and flexibility to adapt to conditions and guest preferences.
Enrichment & Culture (5 pts): Inclusion of meaningful cultural interactions (e.g., respectful visits to Arborek or Sawinggrai villages) and educational components like marine life presentations.
Pacing & Comfort (5 pts): A logical flow that balances diving with relaxation, land excursions, and cruising time. Avoids overcrowding at popular sites.

4. Sustainability & Environmental Commitment (10 Points)

We believe that true luxury travel must be sustainable. We only partner with operators who are active stewards of the environment.

Waste Management (5 pts): Strict and verifiable policies for waste sorting, storage, and disposal in Sorong. Zero tolerance for dumping at sea.
Conservation Practices (5 pts): Enforced ban on single-use plastics, provision of reef-safe sunscreens, use of biodegradable cleaning products, and active support for local conservation initiatives like the Misool Foundation or Raja Ampat Research and Conservation Centre (RARCC).

What Scoring Criteria Do We Actually Use to Rate a Liveaboard?

Every boat and operator we feature is scored against four weighted criteria: safety record, cabin quality, dive-guide ratio, and itinerary flexibility. Why Does Dive-Guide Ratio Matter So Much in Raja Ampat Specifically?

Raja Ampat's currents at sites like Cape Kri, Sardine Reef, and Blue Magic can shift strength within the same dive, and a guide stretched across too many divers cannot react to that in time. We weight this criterion heavily because it is one of the few scoring factors a diver can ask about directly before booking — request the guide-to-guest ratio in writing, not just "small groups," and compare it against what the operator's alternatives comparison shows for similarly priced trips.

How We Weigh Cabin Quality Without Overrating It

Cabin quality is scored last among the four criteria on purpose. A beautifully finished cabin on a boat with a thin safety plan or an overloaded guide roster does not earn a high overall rating in our system — it earns a high cabin sub-score only.
