Dampier Strait Dive Sites

A deep nutrient-rich channel separating Waigeo and Batanta. Currents of 1–4 knots funnel the Indonesian Throughflow, fueling explosive marine biomass. The classical heart of Raja Ampat diving.

Raja Ampat's Convective Engine

The Dampier Strait acts as a primary funnel for the Indonesian Throughflow, concentrating immense volumes of water and the plankton it carries. The result: a series of dive sites defined by strong currents and a density of marine life that is difficult to overstate. Reef hooks and drift profiles are required. Itineraries are planned around lunar cycles to dive these locations during optimal tidal windows.

Cape Kri

Sloping reef at the NE tip of Kri Island. Patrolling reef sharks at 30m, dense schools of barracuda, trevally, fusiliers. Wobbegongs on the reef top. Reef hook essential.

Pelagic seamount

Blue Magic

Submerged oval pinnacle, top at 7m, drops past 30m. Magnet for oceanic mantas (Dec–Mar) and tornadoes of bigeye trevally. Negative entries; unpredictable currents.

Mid-water sweetspot

Sardine Reef

Offshore pinnacle with top at 5m, slope to 25m. Massive bait balls of fusiliers, surgeonfish, bannerfish. Hunting GTs and Spanish mackerel patrol the edges. Pygmy seahorses on the sea fans.

Reef manta cleaning station

Manta Sandy

Shallow channel between two small islands. Sandy plateau at 15m with coral bommies harboring cleaner wrasse. Up to a dozen reef mantas observed at peak (Dec–Mar). Stay behind the dead-coral retaining wall.
